HC Deb 14 March 1988 vol 129 c453W
Mr. O'Brien

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what cases there have been of drinking water in the Yorkshire and Humberside region containing nitrate in excess of the EEC recommended levels in the past 12 months.

Mr. Moynihan

During 1987 one supply provided by Yorkshire water authority and four supplies provided by Anglian water authority exceeded the EC drinking water directive standard for nitrate of 50 milligrams per litre. Two other Yorkshire water authority supplies exceeded the directive standard for a few days. However, none of these supplies contained nitrate at a level which was considered to be a public health risk.
