HC Deb 11 March 1988 vol 129 cc383-4W
Mr. Hood

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what steps he is taking to improve the technical curriculum of secondary schools in Scotland and, in particular the techniques and technology of graphics communication.

Mr. Michael Forsyth

A standard grade course in craft and design has been introduced and standard grade technological studies will be available from autumn 1988. Both courses embody a modern approach to design and technology.

The consultative committee on the curriculum is also reviewing the technological activities area of the curriculum, and the need for further courses in graphical communication.

Mr. Hood

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what are the specific terms of reference for the review of technical education in secondary schools in Scotland.

Mr. Michael Forsyth

The purpose of the review is to consider subjects, in particular technical drawing and engineering, for which there are currently ordinary grade examinations but for which there is no provision at present in the standard grade development programme; and, is view of the relationship of these subjects to standard grade craft and design and standard grade technological studies, to make recommendations about further courses which might be needed to meet modern requirements.
