§ Mr. ButlerTo ask the Secretary of State for Transport when, pursuant to his answer of 7 March, he expects to make a decision or whether forecast traffic growth warrants the construction of the second Severn bridge; and, if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. Peter BottomleyMy right hon. Friend announced on 21 October 1987 that wehad commissioned consultants to undertake detailed engineering and environmental surveys along the recommended route, and to assist in the investigation of the funding, contracting and procedural options. As part of that work the traffic forecasts used in the previous study will be reviewed and revised to take account of the higher traffic levels actually experienced since they were prepared. Their effect on the economic benefits will also be reassessed. When that has been done I hope we shall be able to decide on the timing of its construction.
