§ Mr. Allen McKayTo ask the Secretary of State for Employment if he will give for each year from 1979 to date the numbers unemployed, by categories for(a) the United Kingdom, as a whole, (b) Yorkshire and Humberside, (c) Barnsley metropolitan council area and (d) Barnsley West and Penistone constituency.
§ Mr. Lee[holding answer 22 January]: I am sending the hon. Member a computer printout showing the numbers of unemployed claimants analysed by sex, age and duration of employment in each of the areas requested and Great Britain at January of each year from 1984 to 1988, the numbers of unemployed claimants in Yorkshire and Humberside and Great Britain at January 1983, and the numbers of unemployed registrants in Yorkshire and Humberside and Great Britain at January of each year from 1979 to 1982. Figures for the United Kingdom are not available as comparable figures for Northern Ireland are not available over the time period requested. Unemployment figures for constituencies and local authority areas are derived from the ward-based system and are available only from June 1983. The information is also available in the Library.
