Mr. Mullin

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland (1) how many serving members of the Royal Ulster Constabulary have been charged with murder or manslaughter since 1969;

(2) how many serving members of the Royal Ulster Constabulary have been convicted of murder or manslaughter since 1969, giving the name and date in each case.

Mr. Tom King

[holding answers 29 February 1988]: Statistics prior to 1977 are not readily available. Since 1977 four serving members of the Royal Ulster Constabulary have been charged with murder and two with manslaughter. One officer has been convicted of manslaughter. It is not the practice to disclose details of individual cases.
