Ms. Harman

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will list the cost of employing(a) directly employed staff, (b) temporary directly employed staff and (c) agency staff as (i) nurses, (ii) midwives, (iii) junior doctors and (iv) ancillary staff.

Following is information derived from summarised annual accounts of health authorities in England for 1986–87 (the latest year available):

(b) Medical staff (all grades) 26,064
(c) Ancillary staff 6,359

Supplementary information within the accounts of health authorities show that of the total directly employed National Health Service staff salaries and wages for medical staff (£1,067.5 million) and dental staff (£54.6 million) some £42.3 million and £0.8 million respectively related to locum staff. Otherwise, the annual accounts do not separately identify the costs of directly employed staff engaged on a temporary basis nor the costs of agency midwives and junior doctors.
