§ Mr. SalmondTo ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what proportion of electricity generation in Scotland is met by(a) nuclear, (b) coal-fired, (c) oil fired, (d) hydro and (e) other power stations.
§ Mr. Lang[holding answer 7 March 1988]: I am advised by the Scottish electricity boards, UKAEA and BNFL that the proportions of electricity generation sent out to the supply network from different sources in Scotland during the year ending 31 March 1987 were as follows:
Percentage Nuclear 43.5 Coal-fired 34.4 Oil-fired 9.1 Hydro 12.7 Pumped storage (net) 0.2 Other (for example diesels, wind, private generation) 0.1 100.0
§ Mr. SalmondTo ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will estimate the proportion of electricity generation in Scotland in 1998 which will be met by(a) nuclear, (b) coal-fired, (c) oil-fired, (d) hydro and (e) other power stations.
§ Mr. Lang[holding answer 7 March 1988]: The proportions of electricity generation met from different sources in 1998 will depend upon the availability of fuels and their relative costs at that time. In view of the uncertainties associated with these factors, it is considered that no useful estimates can be made.
