To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs whether, during his discussions with Soviet leaders in Moscow in February, any representations were made as to the need for a reduction in Soviet conventional forces in Eastern Europe; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Mellor

In his talks with Soviet leaders, my right hon. and learned Friend underlined the urgent need for a reduction in Soviet conventional forces in Europe, leading to a stable and secure balance at a lower level of forces. He also stressed the need to eliminate massive Soviet conventional superiority in a speech published in the Soviet press.
