Mr. Chris Smith

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services (1) what is the number of single parents with children under five years who have been on supplementary benefit or income support for six months or longer;

(2) what is the number of single parents with children in full-time education who have been on supplementary benefit or income support for six months or longer.

Mr. Portillo

[holding answer 10 June 1988]: On 6 May 1987, the latest date for which information is available, 286,000 single parents with children under five years of age and 377,000 with children in full-time education, had been receiving supplementary benefit for six months or longer.

It is assumed that all children aged five years and over are in full-time education.

[holding answer 20 June 1988]: The information is not available in the form requested. However on 6 May 1987, the latest date for which figures are available, 3,000 single parents registered as unemployed and getting supplementary benefit had children under the age of 5; and 16,000 had children in full-time education.1 1 It is assumed that all children aged five years and over are in full-time education.
