HC Deb 27 June 1988 vol 136 c57W
Mr. O'Brien

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what information he has as to the areas where inmates at the Newton Lodge secure unit in Wakefield are allowed to visit when on unaccompanied parole, and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Douglas Hogg

Patients detained at the Newton Lodge secure unit at Fieldhead hospital subject to a restriction order under section 41 of the Mental Health Act 1983 may be granted escorted or unescorted leave outside the hospital grounds only with my right hon. Friend's consent. This will be given only after consideration of all the circumstances of the case, including proposals about the areas which the patient will visit while on leave. These proposals will vary according to each individual case.

The movement of patients within the hospital grounds is a matter for the responsible medical officer.
