§ 24. Mr. FearnTo ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many crimes were cleared up under the write-off scheme following admissions by prisoners after interviews by police officers; and what percentage of total crimes was cleared up during 1987.
§ Mr. Douglas HoggCentrally held information about the way in which offences are cleared up is incomplete but it is estimated that, of the 1.2 million notifiable offences which were recorded by the police in England and Wales in 1987 as cleared up, about 200,000 were cleared up following prison visits. The overall clear-up rate for recorded offences during 1987 was 33 per cent.
