§ Mr. Newton[holding answer 4 May 1988]: Figures are not available centrally which identify separately the numbers of clinical staff of universities attached to a teaching hospital whose salaries are not funded by the University Grants Committee. Those for part-time staff funded from all sources are aggregated, as also are the figures for whole-time staff whose posts are wholly or partially funded by other sources. Information published by the Universities Statistical Record indicates that in 1985–86 there were 1,387 whole-time clinical medical and dental staff of universities whose salaries were not wholly funded by universities, an increase of 109 per cent. since 1980–81.
