HC Deb 21 June 1988 vol 135 c547W
Ms. Harman

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will give the latest available figure for the number of university teaching hospital medical and clinical staff whose salaries are not funded by the University Grants Committee; and what is the percentage change since 1980–81.

Mr. Newton

[holding answer 4 May 1988]: Figures are not available centrally which identify separately the numbers of clinical staff of universities attached to a teaching hospital whose salaries are not funded by the University Grants Committee. Those for part-time staff funded from all sources are aggregated, as also are the figures for whole-time staff whose posts are wholly or partially funded by other sources. Information published by the Universities Statistical Record indicates that in 1985–86 there were 1,387 whole-time clinical medical and dental staff of universities whose salaries were not wholly funded by universities, an increase of 109 per cent. since 1980–81.
