To ask the Secretary of State for Social Services what changes in revenue have been made in the Northern regional health authority and Sunderland district health authority during the last five years for which figures are available, both in cash and real terms and as percentages.

Notes to the table

1. The figures for the earlier years have been expressed at 1986–87 prices by the use of the gross domestic product deflator.

2. Capital expenditure and expenditure on family practitioner services is excluded. The latter expenditure is accounted for by family practitioner committees (FPCs) and cannot strictly be attributed to particular districts or regions. However, prior to 1 April 1985 the Sunderland health authority and eight other district health authorities within the northern region each had an associated FPC and those authorities' revenue expenditure for the years before that date includes elements in respect of the administrative expenses of FPCs which are not separately identifiable.
