HC Deb 20 June 1988 vol 135 c376W
Mr. Wigley

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether he is satisfied with the progress being made by the broadcasting authorities in improving television reception in areas at present experiencing difficulties.

Mr. Renton

The BBC and IBA do their best to assist viewers who experience difficulty in obtaining good television reception. They have undertaken a joint programme to extend UHF television coverage to all unserved areas with a population of at least 500. and smaller communities where practicable. Twenty-six new relay transmitters were installed in 1987 serving some 20,000 people. Some 99.4 per cent. of the population are now able to receive BBC and IBA services.
