HC Deb 20 June 1988 vol 135 cc440-1W
19. Mr. David Porter

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what recent measures his Department has taken to improve pedestrian safety.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

We have issued a number of leaflets to help local authorities reduce pedestrian casualties by improved road layout. On 17 May we co-sponsored a conference aimed at identifying the most promising new measures. A total of 95 per cent. of pedestrian casualties are in urban areas. First results from our "urban safety" pilot projects suggest that it is possible to reduce overall pedestrian casualties by 14 per cent. using an areawide approach. I am having copies of the reports placed in the Library.
