Dr. Thomas

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales whether he will list those circulars produced by his Department relating to nuclear accidents and the response of the emergency services.

Mr. Peter Walker

The following are the circulars: 146/75

  • WHC (76)48
  • WHC (85)34
  • Letter dated 10 September 1985

Emergency plans for individual nuclear installations are drawn up by the operator in consultation with the emergency services and are available at local libraries in the vicinity of the plant. A description of the measures to be taken in the event of an emergency at any licensed nuclear installation in the United Kingdom is contained in the Health and Safety Executive's booklet "Emergency Plans for Civil Nuclear Installations", published by HMSO. The lead within Government for nuclear accident planning in respect of installations in England and Wales is taken by my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Energy.
