To ask the Secretary of State for Wales how many maternity units have been closed since 1979, or are planned to close, in each health authority area in Wales.

Since January 1979 a total of 14 maternity units have closed and four have opened in Wales. The breakdown by health authority is as follows:—

Closure proposals have been submitted to my right hon. Friend for decision in respect of St. David's hospital, Bangor, Gwynedd, and the unit at County hospital, Griffithstown, in Gwent.
