Mr. John D. TaylorTo ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, pursuant to his reply of 10 June,Official Report, column 696, what is the United Kingdom's representation in (a) Greek southern Cyprus and (b) Turkish northern Cyprus; and why he has no figures for non-Cypriots resident in southern Cyprus.
§ Mrs. ChalkerThere are 30 United Kingdom-based members of staff and 37 locally engaged staff in the British high commission in Nicosia. The high commission represents Her Majesty's Government's interests throughout Cyprus.
Information about the number of non-Cypriots resident in the south was not available when I answered the hon. Gentleman's earlier question, but further inquiries were then made. I understand that there are about 15,000 non-Cypriots resident in the area controlled by the Government of the Republic of Cyprus.
