HC Deb 16 June 1988 vol 135 c244W
Mr. Thurnham

To ask the. Secretary of State for the Environment what recent representations he has received about safety of waste disposal sites; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Moynihan

I have received a number of representations about the safety of waste disposal sites. Waste disposal facilities are licensed by the waste disposal authorities to ensure that the operations do not endanger public health or the water supply.

Mr. Butler

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what steps will be taken to ensure that the import and dumping of American domestic waste in the United Kingdom conforms with European Community policy to preserve, protect and improve the quality of the environment and to contribute to protecting human health.

Mr. Moynihan

Disposal of all controlled waste is subject to licensing by waste disposal authorities and must take place in accordance with the conditions imposed by the authority on the disposal licence, which are intended to protect health, the water supply and local amenity.
