To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is his estimate of the share of income taken in tax and national insurance from a single man earning(a) £100,000 a year, and (b) £10,000 a year.

Mr. Norman Lamont

A single man with no allowances or reliefs other than his personal allowance earning £100,000 a year in 1988–89 will pay 37.5 per cent. of his earnings in income tax and national insurance. A similar person earning £10,000 a year will pay 27.5 per cent.
