To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many(a) undergraduate students and (b) postgraduate students in each of the Scottish universities came from outside the United Kingdom in each academic year from 1978–79.

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether he will identify the terms of reference of work on(a) civil emergencies and (b) home defence planning carried out in his Department, and the number of staff involved and the annual budgets for 1985–86 and 1987–88; and if he will make a statement.

My Department has no formal terms of reference for these activities. No staff were employed on them and there was no budget for the years in question.
