HC Deb 16 June 1988 vol 135 c206W
Mr. Morley

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland (1) what measures have been taken to prevent the killing of Greenland white-fronted geese during their return to breeding grounds or during the period of preparation for their migration;

(2) what was the date on which licences to shoot Greenland white-fronted geese were withdrawn; what was the reason for their withdrawal; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Michael Forsyth

All licences to shoot Greenland white-fronted geese on Islay were withdrawn on 16 March 1988 to avoid stress to the birds during the period of preparation for return migration to their breeding grounds. The timing of the withdrawal of licences was determined on the basis of advice received from the Nature Conservancy Council. From that date the prohibition on the killing of white-fronted geese has been fully restored and there is no evidence to suggest that any further shooting has taken place.
