§ Mr. DobsonTo ask the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will make it his policy to intervene to prevent the closure of national referral centres, with particular reference to St. Peter's hospital, Henrietta street, London WC2; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. NewtonWhen there is a proposal for a closure or substantial change of use of a Health Service building, there is a clear procedure set out in HSC (IS) 207, a copy of which is in the Library. This requires health authorities to consult on any such proposal which may then be referred for a final decision to the Secretary of State if the relevant community health council objects to the proposal, but the proposal is supported by the regional health authority.
The relocation of St. Peter's hospital has been agreed by the community health council concerned and it would not therefore be appropriate for Ministers to intervene formally. We have nevertheless asked Bloomsbury health authority to ensure that the detailed plans for the relocation are feasible and that the future role of the St. Peter's group of hospitals as a national centre of excellence in urology and nephrology is safeguarded.
§ Mr. DobsonTo ask the Secretary of State for Social Services whether proceeds from the proposed sale of St. Peter's hospital, Henrietta street, London WC2, will revert to his Department; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. NewtonNo. The receipts of such a sale would be received by the relevant health authorities. The hon. Member may wish to contact the chairman of North East Thames regional health authority for further details.
