§ 74. Mr. GillTo ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food by what number he estimates the United Kingdom pig population would need to be increased so as to achieve national self-sufficiency in pigmeat; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. Donald ThompsonLatest estimates indicate that the United Kingdom is currently more than self-sufficient in pork but only 40 per cent. self-sufficient in bacon and ham. An increase in the pig population approaching 30 per cent. would be needed to achieve national self-sufficiency in pigmeat, provided that this increase was wholly used for the production of bacon and ham.
