HC Deb 07 June 1988 vol 134 c481W
Miss Fookes

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will make a statement about the results of research into the damage to the ozone layer over the Arctic and the Antarctic from the production of chlorofluorocarbons.

Mr. Moynihan

It seems evident from recent experiments that the Antarctic ozone hole is caused by man-made CFCs in the special conditions which exist over Antarctica each spring.

The effect of CFCs on the stratosphere over the Arctic is still far from clear; a large experimental programme (in which the United Kingdom is participating) will take place in the Arctic in January 1989 to try to resolve this. Our stratosphere ozone review group has agreed to provide an up-to-date report on these matters as soon as possible.
