To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many language assistants went to which countries under the auspices of the exchange of language assistants scheme in the last year for which figures are available; and how many came from which countries in exchange.

The language assistants scheme administered on behalf of my Department by the Central Bureau for Educational Visits and Exchanges does not operate on the basis of exchanges but of individual appointments arranged with reciprocating countries. In 1987–88, the central bureau arranged for the following English appointments:—
