To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the estimated capital cost of the proposed customs facility at Waterloo station for Channel tunnel passengers.

Mr. Lilley

[holding answer 26 May 1988]: Discussions are at present taking place between Customs and British Rail about the facilities that will be required at Waterloo for the clearance of Channel tunnel passengers. The provision and capital funding of the facilities are the responsibility of British Rail.

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the estimated annual running cost of the proposed customs facility at Waterloo station for Channel tunnel passengers.

[holding answer 26 May 1988]: The arrangements for Customs clearance at Waterloo station have yet to be finalised and it is too early at this stage to estimate what the running costs will be.
