HC Deb 29 July 1988 vol 138 c721W
Mr. Corbyn

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will list the total number of British subjects believed to be in prison in Turkey; what visiting arrangements they have from British officials; and what steps have been taken concerning repatriation.

Mrs. Chalker

There is at present only one British citizen imprisoned in Turkey. British consular officials visit him about once a month.

Both the United Kingdom and Turkey are parties to the Council of Europe convention on the transfer of sentenced persons. The convention came into force for Turkey on 1 January 1988. The Home Office are already in direct contact with the Turkish Ministry of Justice about the possibility of transferring this British prisoner to the United Kingdom.
