§ Dr. Mawhinney[holding answer 27 July 1988]: The information is as follows in respect of grant-aided controlled and maintained schools (including nursery and special schools):
Cleaners 1980–81 5,313 1981–82 5,155 1982–83 5,194 1983–84 5,257 1984–85 5,262 1985–86 5,188 1986–87 4,984 1987–88 5,072 At present some 78 per cent, of cleaning staff' are employed on a part-time basis.
A breakdown of these figures on a sectoral basis is not readily available and could be obtained only at disproportionate cost. The figures also exclude voluntary grammar schools for which such information is not held centrally.
