HC Deb 27 July 1988 vol 138 c285W
Mr. Meacher

To ask the Secretary of State for Energy why, further to his reply of 14 July,Official Report, column 366, he will not make the inquiry into the explosion of the Piper Alpha platform in 1984 available to Parliament now.

Mr. Peter Robinson

The 1984 report will form only part of my Department's evidence to the inquiry. It will be for Lord Cullen, as chairman of the inquiry, to decide how much, if any, of the evidence submitted should be released. It would be wrong for me to pre-empt his decision.

Mr. Doran

To ask the Secretary of State for Energy if he will meet the costs of legal representation of survivors and the relatives of those who died in the Piper Alpha tragedy at the forthcoming public inquiry to be chaired by Lord Cullen.

Mr. Peter Morrison

I have nothing to add to my right hon. Friend's reply to the hon. Member on 25 July 1988 at column 7.

Mr. Doran

To ask the Secretary of State for Energy if he will extend the terms of reference of the public inquiry into the Piper Alpha tragedy to consider the establishment of a no-fault liability compensation scheme; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Peter Morrison

It will be for Lord Cullen to decide, if requested, whether the establishment of a no-fault liability compensation scheme should be considered at the public inquiry.
