To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland how many people are currently unemployed in Scotland; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Lang

On 9 June 1988 there were 288,792 unemployed claimants in Scotland.

This is the lowest level of unemployment since 1981 and is further evidence of the success of the Government's economic policies.
