HC Deb 27 July 1988 vol 138 cc262-3W
Mr. Janner

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what meetings have been held with ethnic minority community and church leaders in connection with his efforts to promote greater racial equality employment within his Department; and when.

Mr. Hurd

Members of staff with responsibility for race relations have continuing contacts with black-led Churches and other ethnic minority communities. These provide occasions for discussion about employment in the Civil Service. The prison department has had meetings in 1986 and 1987 with Church and community leaders.

Mr. Janner

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many and what percentage of the respondents to his monitoring exercises who stated that they were of ethnic minority origin were in grades 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7, respectively.

Mr. Hurd

Thirty members of staff in these or equivalent grades, mainly at the lower end of the range, described themselves as of ethnic minority origin. This is nearly 2 per cent, of the respondents in these grades.
