HC Deb 25 July 1988 vol 138 c59W
Mr. Denis Howell

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment which members of the National Rivers Authority advisory committee have been appointed to safeguard the interests of sport and recreation; what are their qualifications; and which organisations were consulted before these appointments were made.

Mr. Moynihan

Members of the National Rivers Authority advisory committee have been appointed for the contribution they can make in the preparations needed for the establishment of the National Rivers Authority, not to represent particular interests. There was no consultation outside Government before the appointments were made. Until the National Rivers Authority is established, it remains the statutory duty of the water authorities to encourage the use of water and land associated with it for recreation.
