§ Mr. FrenchTo ask the Secretary of State for Transport what representations he has received from motoring organisations about ways of reducing traffic congestion in London; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. Peter BottomleyNone recently. We work to reduce traffic congestion in London by progressing the trunk road programme, supporting the boroughs with their transport policies and programmes, promoting better traffic management, encouraging better parking controls and working with BR and LRT to improve the quality of their services.
§ Mr. FrenchTo ask the Secretary of State for Transport if he will commission a study into the provision of underground tunnels in London to reduce traffic congestion.
§ Mr. Peter BottomleyI have no plans to commission a special study. In addition to the measures already in hand to reduce traffic congestion in London, consultants for the London assessment studies are developing a range of options for relieving problems in the four study areas. Some of these options could include proposals for tunnels to relieve traffic congestion.
