To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what he estimates will be the reduction in the number of research projects funded by his Department resulting from the provisional reduction in research expenditure for 1988–89, class XVI, vote 14.01.

Planned expenditure on health research projects funded by the Scottish Home and Health Department in 1988–89 has not been reduced compared with 1987–88. The provisional figure for expenditure outturn for 1987–88 was £4.764 million, and £.4.795 million has been provided for 1988–89.
