To ask the Secretary of State for Employment what is the latest figure for the number of staff presently employed in the press and public relations office of his Department.

Sixty people are presently employed in the information division of this Department.

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment what is the latest figure for the estimated expenditure by his Department on press and public relations during 1988–89.

Mr. Cope

Estimated expenditure by this Department on press and public relations for 1988–89 is £1.46 million.

This includes an estimated £199,616 for staff transferred from the Manpower Services Commission (now the Training Commission) on the creation of the employment service.

Note: The above figure represents general administrative expenditure relating to costs for staff, accommodation and for regional services.
