HC Deb 21 July 1988 vol 137 c748W
18. Mr. Allen

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will examine the current procedures for enabling prison officers to serve in prison establishments of their choice.

Mr. Douglas Hogg

The overriding need is to provide sufficient staff at all establishments. Subject to that, every effort is made to enable prison officers to serve in the establishment of their choice. In the 12 months up to June 1988, 1,414 experienced officers were given transfers in accordance with their wishes. Of the 857 officers who have joined the service since March 1988, 539 were posted to an establishment of their choice or to one in the immediate area.
