To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what was the total spending by his Department on press, public relations and advertising, respectively, in 1987–88.

Expenditure on advertising totalled £2,741,000. Expenditure on running the information division press and public relations services totalled £373,000. It is not possible to disaggregate the latter figure.

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what is the latest figure for the estimated expenditure by his Department on press and public relations during 1988–89.

The latest estimate for information division press and public relation services costs for 1988–89 is £434,000. This figure covers the overall cost of running the press office, calculated using Her Majesty's HM Treasury simplified ready reckoner for staff and other costs.
