To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many cases of child sexual and physical abuse were reported to his Department from South Yorkshire in the last year for which figures are available; and what were the comparable figures for five years previously.

The information available is given in the table and relates to the number of persons convicted of those offences of violence against the person and sexual offences where the nature of the offence was such that the victim was necessarily aged 16 or under. For other offences of those types the number of victims aged 16 or under is not known.

1 Murder of infant under one year of age, infanticide and cruelty to a child.

2Buggery with a boy under the age of 16 or with a woman or an animal, attempt to commit buggery with a boy under the age of 16 or with a woman or an animal, indecent assault on a male person under 16, indecent assault on a female person under 16, unlawful sexual intercourse with a girl under 13, unlawful sexual intercourse with a girl under 16, incest with a girl under 13, inciting a girl under 16 to have incestuous sexual intercourse, householder permitting unlawful sexual intercourse with a girl under 16, person responsible for girl under 16 causing or encouraging her prostitution etc, abduction of an unmarried girl under 16 and gross indecency with children.
