Mr. Brook[holding answer 18 July 1988]: It is estimated that about £1 million was raised through the payroll-giving scheme during 1987–88, the first year of the scheme's operation. Donations in 1988–89 are expected to be considerably higher as the number of employers participating in the scheme continues to increase, but it is not possible to provide a reliable forecast at this stage.
