To ask the Secretary of State for Energy if he will make a statement on the construction of the Mersey barrage.

I recently announced an extended second phase of the Mersey barrage feasibility studies costing £1.3 million, jointly funded with the Mersey Barrage Company. The studies will further examine engineering, economic and environmental aspects and are expected to last about two years. The timing of the studies will allow the Mersey Barrage Company to negotiate with the electricity companies which result from our privatisation proposals, and thus to form its views on the commercial prospects of the barrage.
