To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what has been the increase in the real exchange rate against the deutschmark since(a) the fourth quarter of 1986 and (b) the fourth quarter of 1976.

A choice of price indices for constructing real exchange rates is available in several international publications, includingInternational Financial Statistics (IMF) and Main Economic Indicators (OECD). Nominal exchange rates are published daily in the national press.
