HC Deb 20 July 1988 vol 137 cc627-8W
Mr. Alton

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if he has any plans to create an equal opportunities commission for disabled people; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Viggers

No. In a statement to the House on 15 July 1987, my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State indicated that after considering the responses to the consultative paper on equality of opportunity in employment in Northern Ireland, he had decided to concentrate legislative and other action on the vital religious issue and that equality of opportunity in relation to sex and disability should continue to be addressed in the same way as in the rest of the United Kingdom.
