To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is the current average expenditure per secondary school pupil in English local authorities; what is the lowest figure; and what is the highest.

Based on actual outturn figures, for 1986–87, local education authorities in England spent an average of £1,340 per secondary school pupil. The figures for individual authorities ranged from £1,145 in Kent to £2,345 in ILEA.
