§ Mr. Gordon BrownTo ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many and what proportion of taxpayers earn less than two-thirds of median male earnings for the latest available date.
§ Mr. Norman Lamont[holding answer 27 June 1988]: It is estimated that in 1987–88 just over 6 million single people and married couples, representing about 30 per cent. of taxpayers, are liable to tax on gross incomes of less than two thirds of median male earnings. (Median full-time adult male earnings in April 1987 were £198.40 per week). The estimate is based on a projection of the 1985–86 survey of personal incomes and is provisional.
