HC Deb 18 July 1988 vol 137 c436W
Mr. Warren

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many computer work stations there are in his Department; what is the ratio of work stations to civil servants; and how he expects this to change over the next five years.

Mrs. Rumbold

On 1 July 1988 there were 1,142 computer work stations of all types in the Department, including Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Schools, encompassing terminals, personal microcomputers, portable computers and text processors.

The total number of staff in the Department, including HMI and all support staff was 2,474. The ratio of work stations to staff was therefore 1:2.2.

The Department has firm plans to increase the number of work stations of all types to around 1,800 over the next three years. This implies a ratio of work stations to staff of 1:1.4 by 1991.
