To ask the Secretary of State for Energy if he will immediately establish an inquiry into the discovery at Drigg of a canister containing plutonium oxide fuel pellets: and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Parkinson

The Health and Safety Executive and Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Pollution have begun a joint investigation into the circumstances in which this canister came to be disposed of at Drigg many years ago. They will consider the implications of this discovery and report to my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for the Environment and myself. Their conclusions will he made public.
