Mr. Warren

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will list the composition of the senior information technology strategy committee in his Department; and how many times in the past year its meetings have been attended by Ministers.

Mr. Ridley

The members of the senior level information technology steering group for the Department of the Environment (Central) are:

  • Director of Administrative Resources (Chairman)
  • Director of Personnel Management and Training
  • Director of Housing Monitoring and Analysis
  • Deputy Director Building Research Establishment
  • Director, East Midlands Regional Office
  • Head of Business Efficiency Services
  • Head of Directorate of Planning Services Division 1
  • Head of Environmental Protection Statistics and Economics Division
  • Head of Finance Analysis Central and Taxation Division
  • Head of Finance Departmental Services Division
  • Head of Finance Local Authority Statistics Division
  • Head of IT Strategic Planning Division
  • CCTA representative

The chairman of the steering group consults Ministers as appropriate.

Members of the main information technology committee in the Property Services Agency are:

  • Principal Establishments Officer (Chairman)
  • Principal Finance Officer
  • Director of Information Technology
  • Director of Home Regional Services
  • Director of London Region
  • Chief Estates Surveyor
  • Director of Defence Services II

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary responsible for the Property Services Agency is kept informed of progress, and recently attended a presentation of the information technology strategy while on a visit to the Hastings computer centre.

Mr. Warren

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment how many of the staff in his Department at grades 1, 2 and 3 have attended courses or training on information technology awareness or management in the last 12 months.

Mr. Ridley

During the financial year 1987–88, one person at grade 2 and 10 people at grade 3 attended courses or training on information technology awareness or information technology management.

In addition, one person at grade 2 and three people at grade 3 attended management courses which had an information technology component. Also, in PSA regular information technology presentations are made to board members (grades 1, 2 and 3), IT committee members (grade 3) and regional and headquarters directors (grades 3 and 4) to keep them informed of developments.
