HC Deb 12 July 1988 vol 137 c194W
Mr. Gregory

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment what information he has on the results of any consumer research regarding public understanding of the crown classification scheme for hotels; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Lee

In 1987 the English Tourist Board (ETB) commissioned a survey of public understanding of the crown scheme. The research was undertaken by MaS Research Ltd. in the last two weeks of March 1987. The results showed that, of a total sample of 4,759 people interviewed, 3 per cent. recognised the crown symbol, and 4 per cent. were aware that the ETB had a rating system for hotels. However, the survey was carried out less than three months after the public launch of the scheme.
