§ Mr. VazTo ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what information he has as to whether all political prisoners held during the two military coups in 1987, and in connection with the recent arms smuggling allegations, have now been released by the Fijian Government.
§ Mr. EggarWe are not aware of any political prisoners being held in Fiji. We understand, however, that there have been a small number of detentions in the last few days in connection with arms smuggling.
§ Mr. VazTo ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs (1) what consultations have taken place with Her Majesty's Government concerning the establishment of a new constitution of the Republic of Fiji;
(2) whether advice on a new constitution will be given in future by Her Majesty's Goverment to the Republic of Fiji.
§ Mr. EggarMy right hon. Friend the Prime Minister told the Prime Minister of Fiji, when he was in London on 29 March, that Britain was ready to offer advice to Fiji in working out a new constitution.
